ANNELISE FORSTER
OLD SCHOLAR

2010-2014

"FRIENDSHIP"

Annelise Forster a student in 2010 to 2014 at St Mary's College. Passionate about the Arts, Annelise has pursued a career as an artist. She is particularly thankful of her Visual Art teacher for encouraging her when at St Mary's College. Her connections with her friends and teachers are strong, even today. Annelise reflects on the opportunities of camps throughout her schooling. She remembers being on camp, where her and another friend dressed up as Jesus and ran around singing songs. Annelise feels that her teachers have helped her to be more self-reliant and independent, helping her through her university degree.

Annelise feels that St Mary's College has helped her to take new positive steps in life, pointing her in the right direction. Her advice for students is that not everything you want will turn out the way you wanted; you don't have to go through it on your own.

COURTNEY SPEAR
OLD SCHOLAR

2004-2014

"EMPOWERED, CONFIDENT AND MOTIVATED"

Courtney emphasised that St Marys gave her confidence to be herself and allowed her to develop who she wanted to be. Her proudest moments were when she got the opportunity to participate in the Vietnam Pilgrimage in Year 11 and going overseas for a Music tour in Ireland. Most of her happiest moments were spent in the Music Department as she always felt excited but anxious when performing. Courtney expressed she learnt how to "Empower Women", how to "care for others" and "the world that we live in".

She discovered that it was important to stay true to herself, to put others first and to give back. Courtney stated St Marys made her realise doing something small is enough to make a difference. She indicated that it's important to have fun and to be involved in programs at St Mary's as a lot of other schools don't provide these opportunities.

OLIVIA QUICK
OLD SCHOLAR

2010-2014

"NEVER GIVE UP"

Olivia Quick started at St Mary's College in 2010 as a Year 8 student and graduated in 2014. One of her most memorable moments at St Mary's College was a social justice parade when she and her friends all dressed up together. Olivia became sick at the start of 2012 and missed out on a lot of her schooling. Whilst in and out of hospital Mr Ray told Olivia, "Stop using your wishbone and start using your backbone". These words have stayed with Olivia.

Due to her strength, courage, and determination she was awarded with the Ethos Award in 2013. Olivia was advised to complete Year 12 over two years. However, she persisted and completed it in one year with a high ATAR. A few years later Olivia had a wish bone tattooed on her backbone as a reminder to persist through the tough times. Olivia would like to thank the school for teaching her courage which has shaped her into who she is today.

KAY DOHERTY
TEACHER

1996-2014

"DOMINICAN HERITAGE"

From childhood through to retirement Kay Doherty remains inspired by her Dominican education. It is no accident she became a teacher of English, Humanities and Religion in Dominican schools, beginning at Blackfriars Priory and moving on to St Mary's. Kay is grateful for the many wonderful teachers and sisters who inspired her along the way. Guided by the Dominican ethos, she has relished the challenge of keeping the heritage and tradition fresh and relevant in the lives of her students.

The Dominican focus on Social Justice and Pastoral Care continue to shape her values and actions in retirement, including time spent tutoring refugees. She believes it has also influenced her politics and the friendships she maintains. Kay's love of history, literature and language remains a legacy of her Dominican heritage which she hopes to pass on through her children, grandchildren and the historical novel she continues to shape in retirement.
